Bed bugs close store in NYC

July 9, 2010

NEW YORK — An Abercrombie & Fitch store in New York that was closed on Friday because of bed bugs reopened Thursday.

The store, in the South Street Seaport in Manhattan, was the second of two stores in the city that closed because of the critters.

Abercrombie’s surf-themed Hollister store in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan reopened Saturday.

The New Albany, Ohio-based chain has requested guidance from city authorities on how to get rid of the pests.

The stores were closed while Abercrombie investigated the problem with its own testing.

Bed Bug symposiums are scheduled for May 18 in Orlando and May 20 in Ft. Lauderdale

FAIRFAX, Va. — Bed bug infestations are on the rise and increasingly showing up in hotels, apartments, dormitories, shelters, homes, public transportation – and virtually any concentrated public area. In response, the National Pest Management Association, Florida Pest Management Association, and the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association, in conjunction with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, are presenting two Bed Bug Symposiums in Florida — May 18 in Orlando and May 20 in Ft. Lauderdale.

“Bed bugs are an elusive, transient pest,” said FPMA President Jim Williamson. “Because of the serious nature of the issue, we are delighted to have prominent representatives from the pest management and hotel and lodging industries presenting workshops designed to offer attendees solutions to effectively eradicate the problem in their facilities.”

“In addition,” continued Williamson, “regulatory officials will offer the most current information on the status of bed bug regulation and what steps must be taken in order to ensure regulatory compliance. It is our intent to provide preventative and corrective tips to help attendees make informed decisions and stay out of the newspaper and the courtroom.”
